Natural selection and more recently, artificial selection for speed and stamina provided to the modern horses unique adaptations to exercise and training. The actual phenotypes show high aerobic and anaerobic capacities (up to 200 ml/kg.min-1) [1,2] increased muscle mass to body weight ratio [2,3] and efficient locomotion [4,5], however weather these structure and functional changes are related to specific genetic variants remains unclear.
